Okayama Castle

Okayama Castle, whose main keep was completed around 1597 during the Keicho era by Ukita Hideie, son of Ukita Naoie who controlled the Okayama region during the Sengoku period, is also known as ""Ujo"" (Crow Castle) due to its black exterior, and ""Kin-u-jo"" (Golden Crow Castle) because of its gold leaf tiles. Although the main keep was destroyed during the war, it was rebuilt in 1966.
In November 2022, the castle underwent a complete renovation with exhibition supervision by Michifumi Isoda, a historian from Okayama City. The exhibits have been revamped to offer an engaging and accessible way to explore history.

Okayama Korakuen Garden

Korakuen is a prime example of a daimyo (feudal lord) garden from the Edo period, distinguished by its expansive lawns. It is counted among Japan’s three most celebrated gardens.
Approximately 300 years ago, Tsunamasa Ikeda, the second lord of the Okayama domain, commissioned its construction as a personal place of relaxation.
Subsequently, successive feudal lords gradually renovated the buildings and created artificial hills over time.
Although the garden suffered extensive damage due to typhoons and wartime air raids, it has been repeatedly restored to nearly its original appearance each time, based on maps and documents from the Edo period. Within the garden, red-crowned cranes are kept, and throughout the autumn and winter seasons, various events such as crane strolls, tea picking, moon viewing, and Fantasy Garden Illumination are held to showcase the beauty of each season.

Autumn 2025 Exhibition at Villa Yurinso
Yasumasa Morimura “Revisiting a Memory in History”
―Encounter of Art, Literature, and Music―

Tuesday, October 7 - Sunday, November 9, 2025

Artist Yasumasa Morimura, who has continued to question the meaning of "I" through his self-portrait works, will be holding a special exhibition at Yurinso in the fall of 2025, “Revisiting a Memory in History” ―Encounter of Art, Literature, and Music― .
What did the artist Morimura's "personal" gaze capture through his encounter with the Ohara Museum of Art? This is a "circulating-style exhibition" where you can experience the journey of his gaze as you visit three locations: the Ohara Museum of Art Main Gallery, Vill Yurinso, and Kojima Torajiro Memorial Gallery.
In Japanese culture, “art”, “literature”, and “music” were once inextricably linked. The Japanese culture has sustained a way of life that involves reaching out to one another without destroying each other’s landscape. This exhibition explores how we can utilize that potential of Japanese culture in today’s age, which is said to be a time of division.
