Gillick reflects on the significance of OAS 2016

This July Liam Gillick returned to Okayama and reflected on his role as the artistic director for Okayama Art Summit 2016. Gillick noted the summit was successful because everyone who came “left as a different person because they suddenly had new ideas and new information”.

Gillick suggested artists offer unique insights that have the power to change cities: “anywhere in the world where the artists have some voice or some influence, the city is better because artists always look at things differently, see things other people don’t see, and they sometimes care about things that people do not care about.”

Gillick said he is sure that Pierre Huyghe will succeed as the artistic director for OAS 2019, but he offered one practical piece of advice: “I would say that he should probably get a bicycle. I walked between the different places and the weather was too hot.”
